…but life took me on a huge detour to get there.
For the longest time I thought I’d left it too late in life, and besides, I live in a village in the Peak District, not round the corner from Soho!
My experience as a singer, musician and love of all things voice led me instead to train and work as a Voice Specialist in Speech & Language Therapy for the NHS.
My career in the health service had a profound effect on me. Working with people who have totally lost their means to communicate and express themselves gave me a stark understanding of the incalculable value of the voice.
It’s been my job to provide advice, information, techniques, emotional support, patience, empathy, an open mind (and open ears). It’s the key reason why I believe I’m such a clear communicator and can remain so calm under pressure.
After years of supporting my patients (and some much needed pushes from my dad), I finally decided to take the leap into my first love. The moment I discovered that I could connect to anyone around the world from my home based studio, it opened up the world for international recording travel!
Looking back from where I am now, my wandering journey to become a voice actor makes complete sense. It gave me all the skills, courage, compassion and connection I needed to finally become a voice actor.
For me creativity is dynamic, fluid, collaborative and exhilirating; a truly life-affirming experience. As a Meisner trained actor, I believe that the approach of living truthfully in imaginary circumstances is how to make a performance genuinely authentic.
I care... About people... About craft... I care about everything that my clients care about. My background in healthcare has shaped my approach, making me a clear communicator who understands that being real and honest matters more than anything.
As much as I love channelling a verbal hug (except when channelling an undead warrior skeleton), I also love changing hats to explore an edgier range of emotions in my character work across gaming, animation and even your IVR system if it calls for it!
The advantage of becoming a voice artist a little bit later in life is the depth and breadth of lived experience that I bring with me. Time and relationships are the most precious of things, and I approach every project with a respect for others' opinions, time and goals.
The easiest way to learn more about me is to use my contact form and get in touch with me. But if you’re not ready yet, here’s some more details about me so you can feel like you know me better before you send that first message!
Beyond my Meisner acting training, I also have 20 years of experience as a musician and singer.
I'm classically trained in saxophone and singing, but have performed in a variety of styles that include Big Band, orchestral, choral, pop and folk.
So now you know that if you need a song or jingle in your project, you don't have to bring in another talent!
I am experienced in most VO genres and have been involved in hundreds of projects covering commercials, corporates, narration, audiobooks and e-learning; with a great deal of experience in medical (due to my handy background in the NHS).
My next big focus is to break out into more character voice acting roles in gaming, audio drama and animation.
I'm always willing to learn a new style or genre, so I can happily offer custom auditions if you are looking for a voice in a genre that you can't find on my website. Just send me a sample of your script and I'll happily show you what I can do.
I have over 20 years of exposure to the weird and wonderful world of medical jargon and specialist training in articulation, which gives me an edge when working with even the most complex technical medical script and narration!
In addition to my specialities in voice and breathing disorders, I have expert training in every aspect of human communication and interaction. This not only makes me a very technical voice talent, but my patient experience also helps me work really well with pretty much everyone (which includes you and your team)!
Now that's an easy one that I can sum up in 3 sentences.
Never stop listening!
Never stop learning!
And always have fun!
The reason that voiceovers are here is to help our clients make a genuine connection and to tell story.
I approach each job with an open mind and equally open ears. The excitement of creation and making new connections, the anticipation of learning something new, bringing humour and consideration for the needs of every team I work with is what makes this job so perfect for me.
I believe you need to leave this world a better place than you found it and that is doubly true when it comes to working with teams who invite me into their creative space.
I truly care about how I make people feel and always aim to leave a positive vibe!
I enjoy great working relationships with my clients and my returning client base are the beating heart of my business.
My clients come from all over the world and include Lloyds Bank, Enon films, NHS, National Rail, Sport England, Lindt, Boots, Oscilla, The National Lottery, Arts Council England and UCLan Publishing.
If I can work with clients as widespread as that, then hopefully you can be confident that I'll fit into your team no problem!
Karen is very professional, efficient and a lovely person to work with. We were delighted with the two voice over reads she has done and look forward to working with her again in the future.
This is so completely lovely – thank you so much for turning Breach into an audio. Karen, you are superb and I really appreciate how you have read it. You’ve done a brilliant job and your voice is exactly right for the story.
Karen, if this is your work in its raw state, then wow! I love it. Thank you for doing such a great job on this. It’s fantastic! I shall return with another story for you in the future. Thanks again!
With Karen’s help, I was able to overcome some very old vocal habits that I had been struggling with. Her non-judgemental and playful approach helped create a safe space for me to explore my authentic voice.
Now that you know how easy I am to work with, it only makes sense that we find a project for us to work on together!
If you think I’m the right fit for your next project then don’t hesitate to drop me an email or call to tell me all about it.
